The Social Media Sharks

Where social media reigns supreme

Bigger Isn’t Always Better

The business world, just like any human activity, is in many ways a fashion show. A certain something becomes popular, a trend is born, and everyone can’t believe how great it is, or that they ever lived without it. Eventually, people begin to over do it, falling into the common trap of thinking, ’some is good, more must be better. Right?’

A recent trend in business, besides hemorrhaging money (small-joke), is investing heavily in social-media tools. An article by one Professor Lamberson at MIT claims that in some cases, many, many connections may make people more hesitant to adopt something new.

By itself, social-media is no profit increasing panacea, suggests the good professor. He makes three major points outlined below:

1—Delivering quality products and services are important for generating positive word of mouth advertising. In other words, people can’t wait to tell others how great, or how terrible, their latest purchase is.

2—A succulent stimulus, such as something for free with a purchase, can help nudge consumers toward trying a novel product.

Social-media is just one weapon in the arsenal, suggests the study. It is most effective, when utilized in conjunction with quality goods and a little nudge.
